Let's Talk Coupon Policy At Kroger!

I got a request to discuss coupon policy at various stores. I'm going to create a permanent link to them soon that can be easily located on this page, that way y'all know.

In the mean time, lets talk about Kroger.

Kroger is cool when it comes to coupons since they have digital ones that can be loaded directly onto you Kroger card here, as well as a doubling coupon policy on paper manufacturer coupons up to $1 (So coupons $.50 or less will double in value).

The digital coupon policy though is interesting and is both good and bad at times. I'll explain, but first read the policy:

Digital Coupon Policy

Customers choosing to participate in the digital coupons are required to have an active online account with a valid, associated shopper card. Kroger employees or partners are prohibited to set up or otherwise maintain an online account not specifically associated to that employee or employee household.

A valid shopper card or an alternate ID is required for the use of digital coupons at the time of purchase.
Digital coupons and offers are deducted from a customer purchase prior to paper coupons or any other discounts and cannot be added back or removed once card has been scanned.
  • Limit one use per digital coupon per transaction
  • Digital offers cannot be combined with manufacturer paper coupons on the purchase of a single item
  • Digital offers do not double
  • A limit of 150 coupons can be loaded per household at one time
The store manager has the right to accept, decline, or limit the use of ANY digital coupon or offer.

Here's what I've noticed in my short time couponing. A lot of the coupons on the digital coupon site already exist in paper form somewhere. In other words, if you got the newspaper this past week or weeks prior, you should already have it.

The biggest downside to them though is they DON'T DOUBLE. Since Kroger doubles paper manufacterer coupons up to a dollar (ex. $.50 is actually a $1, $.25 is actually $.50), A clipped $.50 coupon from the newpaper is better than a $.50 digital coupon on your Kroger card (technically, a $.50 clipped coupon is better than a $.75 coupon. The $.50 one doubles to a $1, the $.75 is still only $.75).

Also, digital coupons count as manufacturer coupons. That means you can't use a clipped coupon AND the digital one. The machine will yell at the cashier. This gets real annoying sometimes keeping track, so I recommend printing up the list of digital coupons on your card and bringing it to the store.

The best thing to use a digital coupon for is something you don't have a clipped one for.

Just be careful at first and pay attention, in time you'll get better and the savings will be VERY worth it!!

  1. Mike, I went to kroger in paris today and was so excited to give them my coupons. Then I noticed that my coupons for .75 cents were not doupling. She said they only double up .60 cents. I asked when this changed and she said its always been this way. Does kroger in Jackson double up to $1.00? Why wouldn't Paris?

  2. According to Kroger's website, coupons valued at $.50 or less will double. All other coupons are at face value. So a $.75 coupon shouldn't double, but the $.50 ones def should. I've used plenty of them and haven't had a problem. I think the cashier was misinformed. I'd try a $.50 coupon next time and see what happens!

  3. When loading digital coupons to my card, I look for ones that are valued over $1 and rare ones (such as store brand) that don't exist elsewhere.

  4. Hi Mike!! I went to Kroger (on University)today and the cashier informed me that they do not double internet printed coupons. (The ones I was going to use were for .50 off.) I didn't see anything in the above policy about this..wondering if this is something new?

  5. Hey Suzanne,
Yea I read your facebook comment and I'm going to look further into this. I've never had an issue in the past and the same Kroger... at least I don't think I have. I'll have to double check, but I'm going to track down their policy in the meantime!
